27.09.2010:Supreme Court refuses to stay Bombay
High Court order: The Supreme
Court today refused to offer any immediate relief to Vodafone, which has
challenged the Bombay High Court order allowing the government to tax the
company's $11 billion deal with Hutch. The tax department had raised a demand
for Rs 12,000 crore as tax on the 2007 deal. While refusing to stay the high
court order, the apex court issued notices to the tax authorities directing them
to decide within four weeks the liabilities of Vodafone.(ET)

26.09.2010:Govt to wait for listing BSNL till its
financial performance improves:
The government on Wednesday said that it will wait for
listing BSNL till the PSU’s financial performance improves. "The issue of
listing would be taken after the performance of BSNL improves to get the right
valuation and after obtaining the views of different stakeholders, like staff
union and associations," DoT said in a reply to queries sent by Public Accounts
Committee on performance of BSNL. (TT)

24.09.2010:AIBSNLOA submits Note to DoT on
utilisation of BSNL's last mile copper:
While making a presentation before the DoT on 9.9.2010, AIBSNLOA was requested
by Member (S), DoT to substantiate its stand against unbundling of BSNL's last
mile copper by submitting concrete suggestions to better utilise the spare last
mile copper with BSNL. AIBSNLOA has submitted the Note as required by
Member (S) pointing out that DoT itself has already opined that 'the Review of
international cases has shown that full open access with LLUB has not succeeded
and may not be suitable in the medium and long term.'

R.Chandrasekar takes charge as Secretary, DoT:
Shri R. Chandrashekhar, a 1975 batch, IAS officer of AP
cadre today assumed regular charge of Secretary, Department of
Telecommunications which was held by him in addition to his substantive charge
of Secretary, Department of Information Technology. Shri Shashi Kant Sharma, a
1976 batch, Bihar cadre, IAS officer took over the charge of Secretary,
Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications and IT
from Shri R. Chandrashekhar. Shri Sharma was Director General (Acquisition) in
the Ministry of Defence prior to his appointment as Secretary, DIT. (ET)

addressed to Prime Minister on refund of 3G spectrum charges:
AIBSNLOA had written to the Prime Minister on

refund of 3G spectrum charges and BWA spectrum charges paid by BSNL. PMO had
forwarded our letter to DoT for 'action as appropriate'[view
our reporting dated 07.09.2010]. DoT has now
replied to us explaining the reasons for the competent authority not acceding to
our request.

'The telecom department’s rationale is based on the fact that state-owned BSNL
owns 6.25 lakh route km of OFC of the total 11 route km of OFC laid across

16.09.2010:House panel to probe BSNL's poor FY10
show: The Parliamentary
Accounts Committee (PAC) has written to the department of telecom to respond
with strategies to improve the finances of BSNL, which posted a loss of Rs
1,822.7 crore for the year to end March, a first in the company’s history. In
the letter sent last week, viewed by ET, the panel has also asked DoT to specify
action taken on BSNL’s long-pending demand of compensation for its loss-making
landline operations, especially in rural India. (ET)

AIBSNLOA made a presentation before DoT today at the scheduled time on four
recommendations which have a direct bearing on the employees.
Com.G.P.Patel, CS, MP Circle was present along with GS. After completion
of the presentation, Member (S) wanted us to submit our specific suggestions for
better utilisation of last mile copper by BSNL. GS has agreed to submit a

deal - Vodafone liable for tax, rules Bombay HC:
Vodafone has not said how much the authorities were
seeking, but a person with knowledge of the matter has said it was about Rs
12,000 crore. But Vodafone is likely to prefer an appeal in Supreme Court of

Approval of 78.2% IDA for fixation in revised IDA scales w.e.f. 1.1.2007:
The BSNL Board which met on 25.08.2010 is reported to have again skipped the
issue listed in the agenda. It is learnt that the Board was not inclined
to take a decision on this issue now, meaning that the issue is virtually
shelved again.
